In 2019, we harvested old vine Petite Sirah from winemaker Francoise Peschon's own home vineyard for the first time. It's an incredibly small plot, more rustic landscaping than vineyard, and only produces a single barrel of wine. That year, I was surprised by the fact that it was my favorite barrel of wine we made. In the summer of 2020, my friend Barry Jenkins visited Napa with his partner Lulu Wang and I hosted them for a little barrel tasting at the winery. Barry's favorite barrel was the same as mine, the old vine petite, though his enthusiasm eclipsed my own, dubbing the wine "fucking delicious." Though that wine ended up in our Heritage blend that year, from that point on, the lone barrel of old vine petite we made every year became known as the "Barry Barrel" around the winery. We'd always floated the idea of bottling it as its own wine, and for the 2021 vintage, we finally did it.This is classic, old vine Petite Sirah. Dark, dense, fruity, tannic, and begging for a nice steak, just what you'll find Barry pairing it with.Tasting notes:As the inky wine pours from the bottle the bouquet bursts out of the glass. Lush iron bark on a hot summer day seeps over the olfactory receptors with an accompanying fruit medley of grilled blueberries, high season raspberries and salted Asian plums. Earth tones of orange rind, sandalwood, black licorice, fresh ground coffee and cocoa nibs.Boisterous tannins on palate carry the rich fruit and primal leather flavours for a long and supple finish that leaves you wanting another glass. | Matt Morris Wines
