SINE QUA NON

2015 M Estate Syrah, Eleven Confessions Vineyard | Ventura, California 750 ml

...let me give you the lowdown on this marriage saver. The cuvee is one of 91% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, 2.6% Grenache (I'm not kidding, we are indeed that precise) and 2.4% Viognier. Here we used 43% whole clusters during fermentation (reasonably high for us with Syrah, but the stems were very ripe) and 66% brand new French oak was used to raise this Goliath.
It is a wine of breathtaking proportions. It spreads out in every direction and won't let go. My own tasting notes state... VERY SQN dark with an almost shining, brilliant color. Mesmerizing actually. The bouquet is surprisingly pronounced and even pushy for such a muscled wine. Just like its spouse, the Grenache, this too has plenty of energy and give and velvetiness and caressing tactfulness. It clearly is a big, masculine, fully formed and exercised wine with lots of tannins and a long, seemingly never-ending finsh. | Manfred Krankl for SQN Wines

The extended aged 2015 Syrah M is more backward and structured, with the 2015 vintage character front and center...its deep purple color is followed by powerful notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, cedarwood, spiced meat, candle wax, and white flowers. It's deep and full-bodied, with a huge mid-palate, building tannins, and one serious finish. This rocking beast of a Syrah stays remarkably elegant and perfectly balanced yet needs 4-5 years or more of bottle age. It's going to evolve for two decades or more. | 99 points, Jeb Dunnuck for
